MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's organizations worldwide to address issues of economic and environmental justice, women’s health and violence against women, and peace building.  MADRE provides resources, training, and support to enable our sister organizations to meet concrete needs in their communities and develop long-term solutions to the crises they face.

Since we began in 1983, MADRE has delivered over 25 million dollars worth of support to community-based women's organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Balkans, and the United States.

Currently, MADRE is working with our newest sister organization Midwives for Peace to train and equip new midwives to help women safely deliver their babies in Palestine. Midwives for Peace is a grassroots group of both Palestinian and Israeli midwives reaching out across borders to ensure that childbirth is a safe and joyful experience for women, despite the conflict that surrounds them.

Proper pre or postnatal care for Palestinian women is often obstructed due to Israeli military checkpoints and road closures in Palestinian areas. The policy prevents women from safely traveling to nearby hospitals for prenatal care or during labor. As a result, there is an alarming increase in women forced to give birth in their cars while detained at military checkpoints or in unsanitary conditions without any skilled birth attendant, resulting in numerous preventable deaths.  Well-trained local midwives are a viable solution for proper care, emotional support and to prevent unnecessary death. 

Midwives for Peace is asking for medical supplies to help equip these brave midwives.  You can help.  MADRE is assembling Safe Birthing Kits containing midwifery supplies that Midwives for Peace can use to ensure that midwives have what they need to improve the safety and quality of childbirth.
